Banner is the most commonly used word in the bible for banners. Other words used are standard, and ensign.
A banner is a piece of cloth attached by an edge to a staff or pole and used by a leader, monarch or lord as his standard or as an ensign displaying a distinct symbol, especially a symbol that is presented as an award of honor or distinction.
A flag is a usually a rectangular piece of fabric of a design and character that is used as a symbol (as of a nation or of a people) or as an instrument to signal with.
An ensign is a flag that is flown and displayed as by a vessel to indicate the symbol of nationality with a distinguishing mark added to its design. In the military it reveals office, rank or power.
A standard is conspicuous or obvious object (like a banner) formerly carried at the top of a pole and used as an identifying mark, a rallying point especially in battle or to serve as an emblem, a heraldic device. It is also the personal flag of the head of a state, president, or member of a royal family. In militaries, a standard refers to a type of “ensign” placed on a vehicle to indicate the rank of the occupant.

Hi there,
just a question……from the few churches i’ve attended I’ve only known one that incorporates the use of banners. I am curious as to know why this is.
Many thanks,
jeannine
Hi Jeannine!
I cannot answer why other churches do not incorporate banners but I can only speculate and answer what happened at our own church.
I do think that most churches are conservative and will not do this out of tradition. Some churches do not understand. Some churches do not care.
Our church had no banners. We brought them in out of obedience. We felt compelled to make them not understanding them ourselves. We were not even sure they would be well received. Thank God our pastor was supportive, but that did not mean others in the church liked them. They cause a stir for sure. But the Holy Spirit always causes and stir.
Our banners are still not widely used in our worship. We have 60 or 70 banners. But they sure come in handy when we want to declare a name of God. God uses them mightily and in unexpected ways.
We never have had formal dancers or formal banner people ever. There is a war over this.
So I don’t know if I answered your question or not. This is from my experience and from my thoughts.
By the way, I was not a banner person at all until God compelled us to make them. It is a mystery.
Kelly
I am so interested in your banners , and you have revealed to me a new understanding of them, I thank God and you.
Glad to help Sylvia, I give God the glory!
As I browsed though your information it lets me know that I’m on the right track. With GOD all things are possible. The first month in April I was given the opportunity to teach a class on, Worshipping with Banners and flags”, a long with another person at the church I attend. The class will end on the third Sunday of this month. It has been a pleasure seeing the faces and experiencing the growth of the students that attend the class each week. It has been a stretch and learning experience for me as well. Thank you for not being stingy with the gift God has blessed you with. Thank you for sharing your information. It has blessed me to know that I’m headed in the right direction.
As I browsed though your teaching information it let me know that I’m on the right track. I began teaching a class at church, a long with another person, called, “Worshipping with Banners and Flags”. It thrills my spirit to see the students learn about banners and flags, their purpose, understanding colors , how it all began with Moses, and how we today are a vital part of using them in the worship experience. It has broaden and stretched my learning as well. Thanks for sharing with us who want to know more. Jacqueline
Thank you so much! Your website is so interesting and informative. I will be sharing this information at our church which is a little on the conservative side and I hope I can show them your website so they can grow in this area too.
